As commissioners we see referral information as it happens rather than months after the event which gives us the ability to adapt the pathways at short notice to potentially redirect patients to services with capacity if any performance and/or capacity issues are visible. There has been significant administrative cost savings in relation to previous paper-based referral management systems; dentists and their staff have saved time in making referrals, servicing rejected referrals, chasing referrals, stationery and postage. Changes to pathways/rules can be rolled out in minutes.  Benchmarking referral patterns, alerts and exception reports allow any potential problems to be spotted early; intervention or education can be targeted at the areas in which they are likely to be most effective. Within Secondary Care the 18 week waits are now better controlled and the hospital providers is able to see early warnings of any increase in demand.
